Talks - Urban AI Symposium "Augmentation" - World Smart City Expo 2026, Busan

I'll be chairing a panel at the World Smart City Expo 2026 in Busan!

๐Ÿ“ Where: World Stage, Exhibition Center 1, BEXCO, Busan, South Korea ๐Ÿ“… When: September 10, 2026

I'm chairing "Decoding Urban Complexity with AI", part of the Urban AI Symposium - "Augmentation", whose theme this year is The "Dartmouth Moment" of Urban AI: Building and Connecting a Self-Sustaining Ecosystem for the Emerging Field of Urban AI. The Symposium is organized by URBAN AI together with Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Land and Housing Corporation, K-water and Busan Metropolitan City.

My panel brings together four different lenses on the same city: the physical environment, regulation and land use, perception and place, and behaviour and movement - my own angle, drawn from what mobile phone and payment data reveal about how people actually use cities. I'll be joined by:

  • Angelos Chronis (Infrared.City) - AI-driven climate simulation, street by street
  • Federico Fernandez (Urbanly) - land-use simulation and large language models inside city planning tools
  • Kee Moon Jang (HKUST Guangzhou) - what AI can and cannot see in a city

Huge thanks to Hubert Beroche and Urban AI for bringing us together for this.

Looking forward to a good, honest conversation - disagreement included - in front of a room of policymakers and city officials who'll be the ones actually deploying these tools.
